Mitral valve repair

The mitral valve or biscuspid valve is a valve in the heart that is locatedĀ  between the left atrium and the left ventricle . It controls the inflow of oxygenated blood from the lungs into the heart, from where it is pumped to the rest of the body.

The most common disorder of mitral valve , is that it becomes leaky and does not close properly and some of the oxygenated blood flows back into the lungs, making breathing difficult. Over a period of time, this can result in heart failure. The other disorder is that the valve will not open properly.

Earlier the most common treatment of the disorders was mitral valve replacement, where the malfunctioning valve was replaced by an artificial valve through mitral valve surgery . However, in recent years, doctors at the Maryland Heart Center have specialized in mitral valve repair for treating this disorder. This technique improves the long term survival rate of the patient and reduces the risk of stroke.
